Blog 4 – April '13 - Knowing the difference between Now Now & Just Now
I’ve only been in Namibia a couple of days but I think I am getting the hang of their phrasing regarding when things are going to happen. There seems to be a lot variation in what each can mean but the below is what I think now now and just now are generally used for and so far it has proven right.
Now now: It is going to happen this very moment.
i.e. I am coming now now means I am coming right now.
Normally when you hear now now in Namibia it’s a good thing, it means something is likely to happen soon(ish). Although when you “need a bakkie now now”, I’ve discovered that it likely means getting off the last leg of a 35 hour transit and jumping straight into a bakkie to test drive it in a country you’ve never driven before. Which sums up my Day 1 in Namibia. While I may have been half asleep through most of those proceedings, getting a car at now now speed means I am the proud owner of a bakkie; an awesome 2009 Nissan 2.4L.
Just now: It will happen in a while, or a few hours or at some point
i.e. you will get your visa just now means that maybe you’ll get your visa before you arrive in Namibia
For example, you can’t get registration now now, but you can get it just now. In anticipation I’d set my entire day 2 aside to get registration sorted (read- getting lost in the city trying to find the right office, spending hours in multiple lines and then finding out that I had, no doubt, filled out the wrong forms only to have to re-queue). But that never happened. I got to spend my time organising essentials like insurance and food while the awesome people at Asco Car Hire (who I bought the car off) spent the day sorting out my rego for me. Getting insurance, which the governing body sets a standard of 12.5% per annum cost on (I'll never complain about Australian car insurance again!) reminded me what just now means. While at the insurer’s office, the eftpos machine stopped working and they said they would call me just now so that I could come back in and try again. It’s the next afternoon, and I am still waiting for that call...
